There are a variety of ways we show appreciation for our employees. Some of these are universal (compensation, company swag), and some of these are unique to the employee. We ask our direct reports about how they want to be appreciated. Some folks like public praise, others like private words of appreciation. Some like an extra day of time off, others like gift cards. Some want a shot at the next most challenging problem. Some want a shot at public speaking opportunities. Some want a day to invest in learning a new skill by taking a class or attending a workshop. We tailor our appreciation to the needs of the individual.
This is an ongoing challenge, and something we talk about openly internally and with prospective candidates. The steps we are taking are 1) Enshrining DE&I as one of our 5 core company values (see: https://heraldapi.notion.site/) 2) Ensuring that we interview a certain number of diverse candidates (currently focused now on gender and ethnicity) in the final round before extending an offer 3) investing resources in recruiting firms who specialize in bringing diverse talent into the pipeline.
Herald has a unique combination of ambition and empathy. We're building infrastructure for one of the largest sectors of the economy (Insurance premiums make up 11% of US GDP), which means we've got a lot of big and interesting problems to solve. And we're having a lot of fun doing it!
